Antonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1850. He was a prominemt Artist who migrated to New York City in 1871 to avoid serving in the Franco-Prussian War. He started painting portraits of vessels of the Old Dominion Steamship Line. Jacobsen received commissions from several prominent shipping lines such as the White Star Line, (Titanic) the Black Ball line, The Fall River Line to paint portraits of all the ships in their respective fleets. He painted over 6000 ships in his career and kept a record of each ship he painted. He was married in New York and had three children, his both sons became artists as well. He moved to Hoboken, New Jersey, where he had his living quarters and a painting studio which is still in existence.
