Frank Shapleigh was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He studied at the Lowell Institute of Art before enlisting in the Union Army in 1863. After the war, he studied in Paris with Emile Lambinet. He usually titled his paintings on the back giving valuable information on how the location looked in the time frame.
